Surplus Computers Can be Affordable

As computers continue to get more powerful and are improved all the time, there are companies and schools that often offer surplus computers.  This happens when the company or school purchases new, upgraded systems and no longer need the older ones.  Depending on the type of corporation, the old models may be offered to employees, other schools, non-profit organizations or even the public.  This can be a good way for someone who needs a computer but isn’t worried about having the latest and greatest model to get one for a good price.  The cost of these older computers is usually quite low.

There are many corporations who simply donate their surplus computers to schools in low-income areas to help improve their ability to learn about technology and to improve skills in reading and mathematics.  These donations help bring children up to speed in ways that are very measureable.  Those children who were at a huge disadvantage now have the ability to learn at a much higher rate, which will eventually help to break the poverty cycle in those low-income areas.

Surplus computers are sometimes available to the general public through companies that sell surplus items of all kinds.  These computers often come with peripherals such as power cables, monitors, keyboards, mice and even servers.  These peripherals may also be offered separately.  Usually, the original operating system has been restored and all proprietary software and data has been removed.  In most cases, no manual for the operating system is included, so you would need to plan to re-install the operating system and to load all of your own necessary software.

Surplus computers come in an ‘as-is’ condition.  Usually broken models are not offered, but there may be some equipment that may need minimal repair.  There is usually no warranty offered with this type of a deal, and no guarantee that anything actually works in any specific way.  Although you might not get everything you want, the cost may still make it an appealing purchase.

When you see deals for surplus computers, do remember that these are pieces of equipment that have been pre-owned and used.  Buying these from a reputable dealer is the best way to minimize problems and lower your chances for parts going bad or not working at all.  Some dealers do a minimal amount of refurbishment on the surplus models so that they are more easily sold.  It is important when you look at used computers or computer parts to check for damage that may not be immediately visible.  You should check out each component thoroughly.  This is especially true for wires and power cables.  If there is damage here, you could have a serious problem down the road.

As you look into the market of surplus computers, remember that you are not getting any kind of guarantee for a used computer.  If it was gently used, then you may be able to use it for many years.  Go with a reputable dealer and be sure to check out every component so that you are confident in how it works before you make your purchase.
