Senior Portraits are Keepsakes

If you have a child who is a senior in high school, then you may have been looking into getting senior portraits taken.  This is different from the annual photograph that is taken and put in the school’s yearbook.  Senior pictures are generally done as a professional photo shoot and are meant to show the personality of the student, as well as how great they look.  These pictures will become keepsakes for many years to come.  Sometimes they are taken the summer before the senior year so that they can be used in assemblies and things throughout the year that the student is a senior.

Perhaps you are wondering how you go about getting the senior portraits taken.  Where do you go?  How expensive are they?  Those are great questions.  Some high schools arrange with portrait studios to contact the parents of the members of the senior class to set up some studio time.  If your school doesn’t have that sort of arrangement, you can contact a photo studio that specialize s in senior portraits and other professional portrait photography.  Sometimes there are even contests and a student may win a discounted photo session in a drawing or other contest.

There can be a big price difference when you are looking for professional senior portraits.  Remember that these are special photos that you want to be proud of, so you may want to think twice before choosing someone with little or no experience as your photographer.  It is a good idea to look at sample photos that the photographer has taken to see if you are happy with the style and quality of the portraits.  If you do a little research, you will be able to select a professional photographer that you can be sure will deliver a good product.  Remember to ask about the costs for the sitting as well as for the prints when you are comparing prices between photographers.

Because senior portraits consist of a professional personal photo session, the student will be asked to bring at least one change of clothing.  Usually formal poses will be taken in dress clothes, such as a tuxedo for the young men or a prom dress for the young ladies.  After these shots, the student will change into one of his or her alternate sets of clothing for more casual shots.  The studio will have a number of backgrounds to take these casual shots that help you get a great feel for your student.  If your student plays an instrument, this might be the place to include it in a few of the photos being taken.

After the casual shots, the photographer usually suggests taking shots that will reflect what the student likes to do in school.  Students are encouraged to bring props that help define them.  For instance, if your student is on a sports team or in a club they might take a letterman’s jacket or prop related to the sport or club.  If your daughter is a cheerleader, she might want some shots in her cheer costume, complete with pom poms. If you have any other ideas, be sure to share them with your photographer.  He will want to be certain that both you and your student are happy with the senior portraits that he has created.
