Landscape Photography is a Lot of Fun

For many people, landscape photography is a fun hobby.  For others, it is their full-time employment.  Some professionals spend hours deciding when, where and how to take the best shot, while hobbyists often just happen onto a promising looking spot and use whatever equipment they happen to have with them. No matter which category you fall into, if you are one of the millions of people who enjoy this type of photography, there are a few things you should be aware of.

One of the first important rules of thumb is to make sure that you have permission to take the photos that you want.  If you ignore private property or no-entry signage you will get into trouble – even if you just want a quick picture.  Signs are there for a reason, and you don’t want to be chased by a bull just because you ignored a sign to get that elusive photograph.  You might also be arrested for trespassing if you ignore posted warnings.  You should always get the approval of the person who owns the land or property you will be entering to take the pictures you want.  Often, landscape photography means taking pictures of untouched areas of the world, but if the land belongs to someone you need to follow the rules.

Whether your landscape photography is a hobby or your main money-making venture, you will need some equipment.  If it is your main source of livelihood, you will want to purchase the necessary cameras, lighting tools and other equipment.  If it is merely a hobby, you should know that good equipment can cost thousands of dollars, so unless you are selling your photographs you may not want the worry over the cost to supersede the enjoyment you get from taking the photos.  There are many reasonably priced cameras that do a great job with landscape photography for the amateur.  Be sure to weigh your wants with your needs and the projected enjoyment you will get from this hobby.

Another good tip for great landscape photography is to take your photographs from a variety of angles and at different times of the day.  Nearly any landscape will have a different look and feel to it in the morning than it will in the afternoon.  Different seasons will also have a big impact on the finished product.  If you have a favorite spot, you may want to photograph it in all seasons and at all times of the day.  Using your imagination to help you think about how a particular place may look at a different time of day or during a different season may help you decide when to take your shots.

Becoming one with nature is one of the side benefits of landscape photography.  Having fun and enjoying oneself is another benefit.  For some people, this fun hobby can turn into a money making venture.  Even if this happens, it is important to retain that sense of fun that got you interested in photography in the first place.  Your joy in taking the pictures will translate into a better picture, so remember to keep having fun.
